Your first wallet: install, back up, verify

A supervised first setup: install from the official source, back up the seed phrase offline, then prove the backup works before funding.

Install from the official source only

Fake wallet apps and lookalike browser extensions are the most common way beginners lose funds. Type the URL yourself or use the vendor's official app-store listing — never install from a link in an ad, email, or direct message.

Write the seed phrase down offline

During setup the wallet shows a 12- or 24-word seed phrase exactly once. Write it on paper, in order, with numbered words. No screenshots, no cloud notes, no photos — anything that touches the internet can be stolen from the internet.

Verify before you trust

Send the smallest possible amount first. Look the transaction up on that chain's block explorer (Etherscan for Ethereum, Solscan for Solana) and confirm it landed at your address. Only then move operating funds — and keep long-term savings on a separate setup, ideally hardware.

Connect to JW3

With a funded wallet, open the terminal and connect. Read what the wallet asks you to sign: a login signature costs nothing and proves address ownership; a transaction signature moves funds and always shows a fee. If a signature request surprises you, reject it — nothing legitimate breaks from one rejected signature.

Risk note: cryptocurrency trading, leveraged perpetual futures, and automated algorithmic strategies carry significant risk of rapid and total financial loss. Never risk funds you cannot afford to lose completely. Nothing in this lesson is investment advice, a recommendation, or an offer to sell any product.

Checklist

  • Installed ONLY from the official source (typed URL or app store listing)
  • Seed phrase written on paper, stored offline, photographed by nothing
  • Sent a tiny test transaction and verified it on a block explorer
  • First real deposit is small, not everything at once
