Chains, networks and gas: why moving money costs money
Every chain is a shared computer that charges for computation. What gas pays for, why fees move, and how to think across 20 chains.

A chain is a shared computer
A blockchain is a network of independent computers that agree on one ledger. Every action — sending tokens, swapping, signing into an app — is computation and storage on that shared machine, and the network charges you for your share. That charge is gas.
What gas actually pays for
Gas pays the network's operators to execute your transaction and record it permanently. More complex actions cost more: a plain transfer is cheap, a multi-step swap through several pools is not. When many people compete for limited space in each block, fees rise; when demand fades, they fall.
Why every chain prices differently
Each network makes its own tradeoff between speed, cost, and decentralization. Some settle every transaction on a large validator set and charge accordingly; others batch thousands of actions off the main chain and settle proofs, splitting the cost. Neither design is "better" in the abstract — they price different guarantees.
Practically: keep a small balance of each chain's native token for fees before you need it. A wallet full of tokens with no gas is a car with no fuel.
Thinking across chains
Your address format may repeat across EVM chains, but balances do not move with it — assets live where they are until a bridge moves them, and bridging is itself a transaction with its own fee and waiting time. Plan multi-chain moves as sequences with a fee budget per step, not as single clicks.
Risk note: cryptocurrency trading, leveraged perpetual futures, and automated algorithmic strategies carry significant risk of rapid and total financial loss. Never risk funds you cannot afford to lose completely. Nothing in this lesson is investment advice, a recommendation, or an offer to sell any product.
